Before writing this text, I had a huge temptation to reread my own MacBook review from a year ago. But the temptation was overcome. I will refresh my memory of the old article only after I finish this one. In the meantime, about the updated version of the 12-inch MacBook, which went on sale a month ago.

I have already written about my struggles, which MacBook to take - 13-inch MacBook Pro or 12-inch. Eventually . Great car. In the fall, I think it will turn into a pumpkin due to the announcement of a radically updated model, but maybe not.

The MacBook obviously needed to be updated, because in the spring it was leaked to BestBuy with a discount of as much as $ 300. Priced at $999, lower than the 13-inch Air, inventory was quickly swept away. For those who do not work with photos and videos, the option was excellent. True, I have heard reviews of insufficient performance even from those who were not noticed in mass RAW processing. Say, open more tabs in the browser - and preved. I, I remember, did not notice anything like that, but I usually don’t have more than a dozen tabs.

And here is the updated model. A new generation of Intel processors and new SSDs with nearly double the write speed. And, as a bonus, increased battery life. Everything else has not changed, and in appearance it is impossible to distinguish an old MacBook from an updated one. Unless, of course, you opt for the Rose Gold version, which has now crept into the world of MacBooks.

I've been using the younger version for three weeks now. I managed to visit with her in three cities - in Sochi, Kazan and Smolensk. All this time I worked a lot on it, wrote different things, watched movies and even the Russia-England match at the European Championship (normally the men dragged me!). And I must say that the improvements went to the thinnest MacBook in history for the benefit. Now this is an absolutely full-fledged device - how, of course, a laptop with a single port can be a full-fledged one.

In order, what I liked.

1) MacBook no longer warms my knees. As we remember, there is no cooler in this model at all, passive cooling is enough for Intel Core m processors. But the first generation had to give too much heat to the radiator case, and under load the user's knees had a hard time. Now the base of the laptop, of course, is not perfectly cold, but perhaps warm, comparable to the temperature of the human body. And that's great.

2) With battery life, things are not very simple. To be honest, I never managed to get the promised 10 hours. On average 7-8. But before it was even less. On the other hand, 8 hours is a really long time, I get tired of staring at a laptop much faster. The line between iPad Pro and MacBook has blurred, both work for about the same time.

3) Speed. After the MacBook Pro was spurred on, I had a fear that the MacBook would seem too leisurely. But no! New processors and SSD gave a very decent appendage. In everyday tasks, the MacBook Pro is a little faster, but these are such trifles that you can ignore. In heavy tasks, the Core i5 and even more so the Core i7 will beat the Core m3 / m5, but who buys "just a MacBook" for heavy tasks?

4) Against the background of all of the above - an amazing compactness. A MacBook weighs like a tablet, takes up space in a backpack like a tablet, but at the same time, you still don’t have a tablet, but a normal laptop. With the usual set of applications and even games. Synchronized with TimeMachine. No, I have a lot of sympathy for the iPad Pro, and I also have it in my backpack all the time in full combat gear. But I still work on a laptop.

I can't say good or bad about the MacBook keyboard. Yes, I know, many are scared of her. Especially from the click sound. I type comfortably on it, no problems. But when, after a long break, you return to the MacBook Pro ... oh, what a thrill. That's where the keyboard is perfect. And here, perhaps, just good.

Disliked refers to the design features of the original version. One USB-C port is not enough. That's a little and that's it. Especially against the background of the fact that it is still not easy to find a flash drive, hard drive or card reader with a USB-C interface. Appear, there is already, but not enough. Well, I want to use the good available on the farm. The adapter partially solves the problem, but, unfortunately, deprives the laptop of elegance.

Also, I cannot forgive the failure of the MagSafe connector on the charger. USB-C is cool, but now you can hook the cable of a charging laptop with your foot, and it will merrily crash to the floor. I think the magnetic connector of the old MacBooks saved you from this scourge more than once or twice. Especially those who have small children at home. It is also now unclear whether the laptop is charged or not. Previously, it was clear at a glance by the color of the diode, but now it's a big deal. Open your laptop and check. And to control the start of charging, they added a beep, like an iPad.

Total

It's funny that, trying on the new MacBook 12 for myself, I can't say for sure whether I would take one or not. Well, that is, it is clear that the MacBook Pro is better. But he is bigger. A productive laptop the size of a tablet is cool. Well, I used it somehow for three whole weeks without a break, it didn’t break. When you take pictures mainly on phones, it is still all poured into the clouds and from there it is synchronized with a laptop. So no connectors are required.

On the side of the 12-inch MacBook and savings. The configuration I need (8/256) costs $1200, and the MacBook Pro is already $1499 (forgive the generous use of US prices, they are just to explain the proportions). And for 1499 you can just take a MacBook with a 512 GB drive, which has recently become the minimum comfortable volume.

No, no, I still prefer the MacBook Pro, where the screen is bigger and the keyboard is more familiar. But the improvements in the 12-inch version are comparable to those between the first and second generations of the MacBook Pro 13 Retina. The first one could be used, but the hardware was clearly working to the limit. But the second generation was already excellent. So here too. There are limitations on the set of tasks, but in general the piece of iron is correct, balanced and suitable for everyday use.

And, most importantly, the cat shed tears of alternatives. Probably, apart from the new Lenovo Yoga on Core m, nothing comes to mind ...

It makes no sense to repeat some things about a laptop, everything is written in last year's article - it's worth reading about the keyboard, design, and other chips. Let's talk about changes and additions here.

Naturally, the "rose gold" version appeared, already copied by almost all the big manufacturers in their smartphones and other devices. Previously, there were small phones for women, but now there is a different approach - one device, but there is a color differentiation of pants, as in the movie "Kin-dza-dza." Gray for boys, pink for girls, gold for mods, but some say pink is for mods too. Well, I don’t know - maybe you can tell in the comments which laptop is for whom?

I specifically asked for a pink review to show you this miracle. Probably, the tradition will pass to the MacBook Pro, and in the future, maybe even to the iMac, who knows.

The dimensions remained the same, 28.05 x 19.65 cm, thickness - 1.31 cm (where the connectors are), weight - 0.92 kg, before buying a large iPad Pro, I would advise you to think a hundred times whether to take a tablet or stop at a laptop with a full OS, especially since the updated MacBook has become even faster. Thin macbook from Apple offers some serious performance.

The MacBook is a story of compromise. With more pixels than a MacBook Air, its display lets you be more productive on the go, and when you toss it in your backpack, it's like it's not there. And while it's not the most powerful machine (4K photo editing is a bit of a pain on this machine), the laptop handles traditional tasks with ease.

A year later, Apple updated the MacBook with new sixth-generation Intel processors, offering fast memory, RAM, and graphics for the same price. The most interesting change, however, is on the outside: a new "rose gold" finish that lets you buy a shiny pink Apple laptop for the first time. Gender stereotypes aside.

But despite the upgrade, the new MacBook isn't a replacement for the MacBook Air, which got its own re-release—it's still the same unique, dazzling, and sophisticated laptop as the one that launched one year ago. Only faster and with better battery life.

The new processor, combined with fast internal memory, RAM and graphics, brings a significant performance boost to the MacBook. You still have to deal with a single USB-C port somehow, using additional adapters and connectors to equip your FrankenMac with additional limbs.

And if you couldn't get along with its super-small keyboard, your fingers will remain as unhappy as ever - especially during long typing sessions.

Latest improvements

It's been almost a year since Apple first unveiled the rose gold MacBook, and now, with new Intel Kaby Lake processors, we can't help but wonder where the sequel is.

If the patent spotted by Apple Insider is to be believed, the next MacBook will remain a not-so-traditional laptop for everyone. Instead, the patent points to Apple's conceptual approach that transforms iOS to run in a modular laptop. Of course, patents don't always come to fruition, so you should take the information with a healthy dose of skepticism.

In the meantime, you can now enjoy Night Shift on your MacBook laptop, a solution that has migrated from iOS to help reduce screen blue light so you can sleep better at night after using your laptop. This feature comes with macOS Sierra 10.12.4, so if you haven't updated your system yet, now is the time to do so.

MacBook: Big money

Some users were waiting for Apple to drop the price of the updated MacBook to sweeten the deal. But that did not happen. The entry-level model is still $85,000, a few thousand more than the 13-inch MacBook Pro Retina.

If the cost of the laptop remains too high for you, consider purchasing last year's model from Apple's reStore. And while the early 2016 MacBook is a technically superior machine, you won't see any difference between the two during normal user tasks like surfing the web and working on documents.

It's also thinner than the MacBook Air (325 x 227 x 17mm). The 12-inch MacBook is also lighter than this pair of laptops, weighing just 921 grams compared to the Air's 1.08 kg. It's about the same as two in hand.

For comparison, the tablet weighs 1.075 kg with the keyboard case together. Other Windows 10 machines are catching up with new design standards, take a look at the HP Specter 13 review. And while the new MacBook remains a fine technical feat that hasn't lost its appeal, advances made by competitors mean you don't have to choose between attractive design and practicality.

However, later generations of laptops increasingly used Core M as processors got to the point where in some tasks you can't tell if you're using a Core M or Core i series of processors.

Unfortunately, the Core M processors in the 2015 MacBook weren't powerful enough to deliver a smooth OS X 10.10 Yosemite experience. We have found that disabling transparency and animation effects, as well as an adequate number of concurrent programs, is vital to eliminating any stutter while you work.

So how does the updated MacBook perform?

The good news is that the new processors have turned the MacBook into a machine that performs very efficiently under stress. We tested the entry-level model and the mid-configuration version, and found that both machines offered a smooth experience out of the box, without fine-tuning OS X settings.

The 2304 x 1440 display remains one of the best we've seen on laptops, and it's also the best on a MacBook. These are incredibly rich colors and an excellent 170-degree viewing angle.

There's another benefit: you can scale it up to get more desktop space, and the offer goes way beyond Apple's standard resolution scaling. Using Custom Resolution, we were able to use 1920 x 1080 pixels in High-DPI mode with SwitchResX, which allowed us to see the same number of tables, rows and columns as on a 27-inch monitor. Sure, the text got tiny, but we were able to parse numbers and edit tables without any problems.

And while you don't use this solution on a permanent basis, with my old laptop, 11" MacBook Air, I was forced to connect to a portable monitor via USB DisplayLink, but now I see enough working area. This solution is made possible by the high resolution capabilities of Windows and Apple machines, but having that much space has an impressive effect on a pencil-thin 12.1-inch laptop.

Final Thoughts

The MacBook (Early 2016) isn't going to take over the ultra-thin laptop market, but it's hard to pass up when you're swayed by the capabilities of Apple's latest laptop. Even better, the new rose gold version is just gorgeous.

We liked: With more horsepower under the hood of your MacBook, you won't have to tweak OS X El Capitan to get smooth performance. This series of notebooks continues to live up to the motto: It just works. The increase in nominal output offers a noticeable difference. But that doesn't mean you'll suddenly trade yours in for an ultrabook for heavy computing tasks.

Apple doesn't change the design of the MacBook because it doesn't have to. The Apple laptop still can't even match its Windows counterparts, though we're not sure if that won't change in the next six months. The display, densely packed with colors, looks as vibrant as the previous model, and just try to find a 12- or 13-inch laptop with better speakers. This is an almost impossible task.

We didn't like it A: The single USB-C port is the biggest problem with the 12-inch MacBook. The trade-offs are simply too many to use a laptop as a primary machine, even on the go, you have to choose between plugging in a peripheral or charging your laptop if you don't have a splitter handy. It would be great to see a price drop, as the MacBook should, at the very least, deliver unreservedly smooth OS performance for its price. If the new MacBook Air and Pro arrive this summer, you can look forward to a price cut.

Summing up…

Should I buy a new 12-inch MacBook? It's a tricky question, given the likelihood of new MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros arriving soon. One thing is for sure, the new laptops won't be as thin and portable - a similar thickness would require an almost impossible feat of engineering. On the other hand, if you're willing to wait for machines with more performance, it's worth the wait.

8 Overall Score

Verdict:

Apple is giving the new MacBook a much-anticipated performance boost that helps OS X run blazing fast. Critical flaws remain, but the 2016 MacBook is a far less risky purchase than the 2015 models. We only wish it was a little cheaper.

October 27, Apple introduced a new generation of professional laptops MacBook Pro. Jokes aside, but the modern MacBook Pro is really hard to call Pro in the usual sense of the word. Perhaps they would be more suitable for a name without the word Pro in the title. Just a MacBook as a slim and stylish ultrabook before. MacBook 12, 13, 15.

New "firmware" - the most casual professional Apple laptops, as if created for representatives of the creative class and fashionistas who are ready to make some functional sacrifices for the sake of appearance. Have the MacBook Pros become less suitable for serious work? Partly. Have they gotten worse? Hardly. We got acquainted with the junior representative of the line - MacBook Pro 13 without Touch Bar - and were left under a very pleasant impression. This is the best MacBook Pro ever made.

Equipment and features

The delivery set of the device is no different from the company's previous laptops. All the same pieces of paper, stickers, apples, power adapter. From the new - USB-C cable without MagSafe on the end. This is the main loss, against which even the absence of a luminous logo on the lid fades. How many laptops were saved by a cable unfastened in time is unknown, but definitely a lot. Now you have to be much more careful and not allow children or animals to play with the MacBook wire while charging, and even look at your feet once again. This solution has only one significant plus - you are no longer tied to an outlet and can charge your computer from any external battery with a suitable cable.

The new base MacBook Pro has just two Thunderbolt 3 ports combined with USB-C. If you already had a MacBook 12″ and bought adapters, then you don’t need to throw them away, the same connector is used, only with support for higher speeds - up to 40 Gb / s. Both ports support maximum data transfer rates, and this distinguishes the MacBook Pro with function keys from its touch strip version, where the two ports on the right side operate at reduced speeds. Apple even recommends connecting the most speed-demanding peripherals to the left-hand ports. A simple MacBook Pro has only them.

Two ports are twice as many as in a 12-inch MacBook (yes, don't be surprised) and this is quite enough for a comfortable life. You can connect a camera or iPhone using a proprietary adapter for 2000 rubles from USB to USB-C. Unpleasant, but what can you do. This is a transition (literally) period, not only for us, but also for Apple. In a year or two, everything will come to uniformity, do not hesitate.

Despite the lack of a touch panel and the presence of function keys, the new MacBook Pro does not require you to press the power button to turn it on. Just open the lid and start setting up. The legendary power-up sound is no more and now it will not scare all your neighbors at night.

Built into every MacBook, the migration assistant will effortlessly transfer all your data from your old laptop to your new one, right down to the last bookmark and open page. It is enough to connect both devices to the same wireless network or connect them with a cable. Keep in mind that along with this, all your bugs, glitches and tails from the old computer will also be transferred, so it is sometimes wiser to set up a new device as new.

Design

In addition to the new ports and the no longer burning steel apple, the new color of the MacBook Pro, already familiar from the 12-inch MacBook, Space Gray, immediately catches the eye. The dark gray MacBook Pro looks incredible and pairs perfectly with the black iPhone 7 Plus and space gray Apple Watch.

The body of the novelty is made in full accordance with the MacBook. There are no plastic parts and the dimensions are comparable. This year's 13-inch MacBook Pro is much smaller, thinner and lighter than past Pro laptops. Only 1.37 kg of weight and 14.9 mm of thickness! If you put them side by side or stacked on top of each other, you can only be surprised at Apple's ability to cram so much into such a compact body. Someday the iPhone will be the same again. Even the frames around the display have been minimized - they have become almost two times smaller. After the new MacBook Pro, you won’t look at the old “firmware” without tears. They look like greetings from the last century.

Screen

The old Retina display is about the same after the new one, which has become brighter, more contrast and more saturated. Support for the P3 color profile aligns your MacBook with the latest iPhones and iPads so your photos look their best everywhere.

Keyboard and trackpad

The Force Touch trackpad has doubled in size and is now an incredible size. This directly affects the usability. It's unclear why a touch bar was built into older versions of the MacBook Pro with such a chic canvas under the keyboard. It is always at hand and you do not need to reach anywhere. The keys are twice the size of the old MacBook keyboard, but they are almost the same size as on the 12-inch MacBook. The design of the keyboard is similar - "butterfly", but already the second generation, with 4 times more stable keys and a clear click. As in a simple MacBook, each button is highlighted with a separate LED, and not the whole canvas, as a result of which the backlight has become more even and more pleasing to the eyes in the dark.

Sound

Apple not only halved the bezels and doubled the trackpad, but also made the built-in speakers 2.5 times bassier and 58% louder. The peak power of the loudspeakers has increased by 3 times, and the sound range has become 2 times wider. For background support, no columns are needed anymore. The MacBook Pro sounds really cool. And Apple even left the good old 3.5mm audio jack, adding a headache to iPhone 7 owners, but saving conservative users from it. Get ready to say goodbye to the next generation of MacBooks as well.

Filling and performance

The base MacBook Pro 13 without Touch Bar is equipped with the weakest hardware of the entire 2016 lineup, but thanks to optimizations and improved energy efficiency, it is comparable in performance to last year's top 13-inch model. Accordingly, there is no point in changing last year's device to a new one, only if you are tired of the old ports and want something new.

It uses a dual-core 64-bit Intel Core i5 chipset with a frequency of 2 GHz, Intel Iris Pro 540 graphics, 8 GB of RAM and a 256 GB SSD drive. Everything works as quickly and smoothly as possible. You can even play toys: Civilization VI runs very briskly on standard settings. There will be no problems rendering 4K video shot on the iPhone 7 Plus in Final Cut or iMovie either.

Unlike the MacBook, there are fans and they are noticeably noisy under heavy load, and the laptop case gets hot, although it cools down quickly.

As before, the MacBook Pro provides up to 10 hours of battery life, and in the case of the version without the Touch Bar, you can confidently count on these numbers, but the model with the touch panel received a slightly smaller battery. There is another important difference between them: the SSD in the case of the touch version of the laptop is soldered to the motherboard and cannot be replaced or upgraded on its own. After all, there is no other way: a 128 GB or 256 GB SD card cannot be inserted into any of the new MacBook Pros!

In the case of filling a laptop with a touch bar with liquid, you run the risk of being left without all your data, since the drive cannot be saved. A weighty reason to think about choosing a modification with a traditional full-fledged keyboard.

There is not much to say about macOS 10.12.1, it works flawlessly, receives calls and messages from the iPhone, exchanges text via the shared clipboard, and unlocks perfectly with the Apple Watch. If you have an Apple watch, then you don't really need Touch ID on the touch version of the MacBook Pro.

Conclusion

The 2016 MacBook Pro is so compact, solid, and beautiful that it's hard to call it a tough workhorse. It's more like a MacBook on steroids, an improved version of it. If you missed the screen size or the power of Apple's smallest laptop today, it makes sense to take a closer look at the new MacBook Pro. It will also be ideal for upgrading from the base 2013 model.
